The Whisper Eel is a pale thread of motion that slips through ballast shadows and cable noise, speaking in tiny clicks that sound unsettlingly like distant crew chatter. It is small compared to the trench's larger predators, but it has a talent for making a submarine feel less alone. Its weak electrical pulse can wake old sensors and feed a trickle of useful readings into a voyage. The same pulse also carries false echoes, making crews hear knocks from empty water or voices from compartments nobody entered. When a Whisper Eel follows the hull, veterans lower their voices. Not because it understands them, they say, but because it learns the shape of fear very quickly.
