The Lifeboat Lanternfish carries a small brass glow under its jaw and pale sides striped like old rescue ropes. It gathers around weak lights and seems to point its nose toward safer water, though nobody trusts it completely. Navigators like to catch one before a long drift, just in case luck can be cooked.
