The Abyssal Compass Ray carries a natural magnetic crown along its spine, turning slowly as it glides through trenches where ordinary instruments begin to lie. Its broad wings stir almost no silt, but every pass leaves needles trembling and maps feeling suddenly uncertain. Navigators value the Ray because it can reveal the shape of hidden currents and metallic ruins. Following one too closely is risky, though; the Ray's field can pull a submarine's sense of direction off true, leading crews into loops they do not recognize until the same wreck appears twice. The old rule is simple: trust the Ray's path, not its shadow.
